On Wednesday 6th November, a group of Year 9 students went to see Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. It was an unforgettable experience that deeply resonated with everyone. This iconic play, originally by Samuel Beckett, explores the lives of two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who wait endlessly for a mysterious figure named Godot, who never arrives.
The play delves into themes of time, existence, and the search for meaning in a seemingly indifferent universe, often with dark humor. Our students were engaged and intrigued by Berkoff’s distinctive physical and exaggerated style, which added a fresh dynamic to the classic text.
Before and after the show, we discussed the play’s themes and Berkoff’s interpretive choices, helping the students to appreciate its absurdist nature and to connect it with their own questions about purpose and patience. The experience sparked insightful discussions that continued long after we returned to school, showcasing the power of live theatre to captivate young minds.
