Year 8 Personal Project Conference

Central Foundation held a Year 8 Personal Project Conference on Monday 7th July. It forms part of the Central Baccalaureate, a unique programme which delivery is supported by a generous donation from the Hearn Foundation.

It was a truly memorable event for students. It also showcased the breadth of our curriculum; many students citied learning a topic in the classroom as their inspiration for the research they conducted.

Students researched a wide range of topics from Nigeria, Jamaica and Malaysia to Myanmar and Ancient Egypt; from the American Civil War and Football to the Development of Artificial Intelligence and Video Games.

Daniel’s work on “The History of Myanmar” was particularly memorable and he provided a personal insight into the country.

The poem he wrote, as part of his project, is below:

The Gift of Peace by Daniel (Year 8)

My thoughts drift and wonder,

I think of blood, tears, and bullets that splatter the fields,

Expressions, sad and sombre

Every night I hope for peace, that terror yields

A land of freedom and democracy

However, as morning shines rays of warmth, it makes us hopeful

Still, there is a sense of dread and despair as reality

Strikes me to the core.

Surely, not war.

News of senseless murder, boys only a few years older and me,

Captured and killed for reasons I will never comprehend,

Cities receive rain as artillery,

As you see, the terror never ends.

Buildings laid waste; the infections stench of death reeks

And I think these thoughts, lying in the safety of peace.

Now, take a moment of silent introspection, to think,

How do we build a better and a brighter future for us?

Surely, not through war.
