Year 13 Physics Trip to CERN in Switzerland

Our Year 13 Physics students recently enjoyed an exciting and enriching two-day trip to Switzerland on 6th and 7th November, where science and culture came together in an unforgettable experience.

The highlight of the visit was a tour of CERN, including one of the sites where particle-collision measurements take place. Students were guided by physicists working directly on the experiments, giving them a unique opportunity to ask detailed questions and experience the impressive magnetic fields used in particle research. It was an inspiring insight into cutting-edge physics in action.

That evening, the group enjoyed a traditional Swiss fondue meal—an interesting cultural experience that received mixed reviews from students.

The following day began with a scenic walk past Lake Geneva to the United Nations Palais des Nations. Students toured the building, learned about the work of various councils, and even observed the Human Rights Committee in session. They then visited the Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, exploring the organisation’s history and global humanitarian role.

The trip concluded with some well-earned time to browse local shops for chocolate and souvenirs before heading to the airport. It was an action-packed, varied, and informative visit, and we hope students gained both scientific insight and cultural appreciation from the experience.
