Our Year 12 A level Chemists attended a wonderful trip to the Chemistry department at University College London (UCL) on Friday 23rd June. They spent the day having a tour of the campus, discussing why people choose to study Chemistry and what kinds of problems they are trying to solve in the future.
We had the pleasure of meeting Dr River Riley, whose main job was to fire lasers at molecules and see how they behave! Next, the Year 12s completed a lab project whereby they had to produce, isolate and crystallise a compound commonly found in soft drinks.
All students really enjoyed being in a university grade laboratory, with Dr Riley praising our students for their hard work and diligence during the practical session.
The students were gifted a molecular modelling set each, with students assuring us that they will create many wonderful molecules at home.
