After defeating last year’s London Cup champions in the quarter-finals, Central travelled to Barking knowing that victory would put them within touching distance of silverware for a third consecutive season on Tuesday 28th April.
A cagey opening saw both sides probing and trying to gain a foothold. Chances were limited, but both teams created half opportunities, with captain Taylor continuing his fine form from the previous round to keep things secure at the back.
Midway through the first half, the breakthrough came. Ari, who was outstanding throughout, surged through midfield and delivered a dangerous cross to the in-form Albert, who finished neatly past the goalkeeper.
Riverside responded well, and just minutes later a well-worked move resulted in a cross to the back post, where a powerful header brought them level with 8 minutes remaining before half-time.
1–1 at the break, with everything still to play for.
Central started the second half on the front foot. Excellent tenacity in midfield saw the ball fall to Mordecai, who slipped Albert through for his second of the game. He made no mistake, guiding a precise finish into the far corner to restore the lead.
Ten minutes later, Prince was brought down in the box, offering Albert the chance to complete his hat-trick and all but seal the win. However, an outstanding triple save denied Albert twice and Mordecai on the follow-up.
Central remained resolute, standing firm under pressure and limiting Riverside to half chances. With just two minutes remaining, Central broke decisively. A brilliant pass from Alfie released Prince, who was brought down once again to win a second penalty. This time, Ari stepped up and emphatically smashed the ball into the top corner to secure Central’s place in the London Cup Final.
A superb all-round team performance. The boys have developed tremendously over the years, and this is now clearly being reflected on the pitch.
