The second round of the national Urban Debate League competition was hosted at Clapton Girls Academy on Thursday 29th February. After the first round where Central Foundation Boys’ School ranked 6th in the UK, our three debating teams went into Round 2 in good spirits following 5 wins in the first round.
The first debate was on the motion “this house believes that all secondary school students should be given the vote“. This was a prepared motion meaning the students had been informed about it a week prior. All three teams (A,B and C) came out of the first debate victorious. The A team were up against our sister school, Central Foundation Girls in this debate.
The second debate was on the motion “this house would ban the use of mobile phones in schools“. This was an unprepared motion, meaning they had 15 minutes to prepare their arguments. Once again all three teams (A,B and C) won.
Of particular note was the performance of the A team in the second debate. Two speakers achieved a perfect score on their content, style and structure.
- Team A – Mazan, Dawud, Mylo, Finlay, Michael, Billy
- Team B – Taylor, Albert, Nathan, Daniel, Rahim
- Team C (a novice team participating in Debate Mate for the first time this year) – Rafel, Caio, Matthew, Max
Update
The scores are tallied up, in, and the schools are placed into a final league table. The top 16 schools nationally advance to the Urban Debate League Final.
Our Year 10 Team A has finished 2nd out of 98 teams nationally! They will be going through to the final of the Urban Debate League.
Our Year 8 novice team C, who were taking part in Debate Mate for the first time, finished a respectable 17th just missing out on a place in the final.
