The English Speaking Union – Churchill’s Public Speaking Competition

On Wednesday 20th November, a group of students from Year 8 and 9 took part in the first round of the English Speaking Union’s (ESU) Churchill Public Speaking Competition. The competition was named after the former prime minister, who also served as chairman of the English Speaking Union.

Students were tasked with preparing speeches on a range of topics from The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to Rosa Parks’ famous quote, ‘You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it’s right.

Students acted as both speakers, chairpersons and questioners, developing a range of oracy skills. The students were prepared for the competition during their LAMDA sessions that were launched at CFBS this year.
