The Access Project: Year 12 Oxbridge Society Students Explore the University of Cambridge

On Saturday 22nd March, eighteen of our Year 12 Oxbridge Society students on The Access Project embarked on an inspiring visit to the University of Cambridge, accompanied by their University Access Officer. This trip, part of the Oxbridge Pathway provision, provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the university first-hand, engage in academic discussions, and gain crucial insight into the admissions process—all while experiencing a new city for the day.

The visit began with guided tours of Newnham College and Selwyn College, where students explored the historic buildings, learnt about the distinctive college system, and spoke with current undergraduates about university life. These conversations were invaluable, offering a first-hand perspective on what it is like to study at Cambridge and the opportunities available to students.

A key highlight of the day was the admissions workshop, which provided an in-depth look at the application process, personal statements, interviews, and student finance. Students found this session particularly insightful, as it addressed common concerns and gave them a clearer understanding of how to prepare strong applications. Many were also surprised by the wide range of courses available at Cambridge, discovering new subject options and interdisciplinary pathways that they had not previously considered.

One of the most exciting aspects of the trip was the mock supervision workshops, where students took part in subject-specific academic discussions led by Master’s and PhD students. These sessions provided a real insight into the Oxbridge teaching style, where critical thinking, debate, and independent analysis are at the heart of learning. Experiencing this first-hand helped students to see the level of intellectual challenge and engagement that studying at Cambridge entails.

Beyond the academic sessions, students also enjoyed the opportunity to explore Cambridge, soaking in the atmosphere of the historic city. Engaging with current undergraduates throughout the day allowed them to ask insightful questions—not only about their courses, but also about student life, societies, and the transition from school to university.

The trip was a great success, leaving students feeling inspired, motivated, and well-informed about their next steps. With ongoing support through The Access Project and our Oxbridge Pathway provision, they will continue to receive tailored guidance to ensure they are well-prepared to apply to Oxford or Cambridge.

For these aspiring students, the experience was more than just a visit—it was a glimpse into a possible future, helping them to envision themselves studying at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.
