The school council recently embarked on an enriching trip to City Hall, offering pupils a unique opportunity to dive into London’s rich history and gain insights into the intricate workings of its government. The visit was a chance for students to learn about the vital roles played by key institutions such as the Mayor of London, the London Assembly, and the Greater London Authority (GLA).
The day began in one of City Hall’s impressive committee rooms, where students participated in a tailored session designed to deepen their understanding of civic engagement and the importance of active involvement in shaping their city. They explored the structure of London’s government, learning how decisions are made and implemented to meet the needs of over nine million Londoners.
The interactive session included opportunities for students to ask questions and observe public meetings being held by the London Assembly. This first-hand look at how London’s governance operates was not only educational but also inspiring, sparking lively discussions among the students about the impact of politics on everyday life.
After the session, the group enjoyed a scenic ride on the London Cable Car, which offered stunning panoramic views of the city from above. As they soared over the Thames, students marvelled at iconic landmarks and reflected on the importance of infrastructure and urban planning in a world-class city like London.
The members of the school council were praised for their excellent behaviour throughout the day, impressing everyone with their maturity, curiosity, and engagement. Many students expressed newfound appreciation for civic responsibility, and some even shared aspirations to pursue a career in politics.
