School Council Trip to City Hall

On Thursday 20th November, the School Council embarked on an enriching trip to City Hall, giving pupils a unique opportunity to explore London’s rich history and gain first-hand insight into the intricate workings of its government. The visit allowed students to learn about the vital roles played by key institutions such as the Mayor of London, the London Assembly, and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

The day began in one of City Hall’s impressive committee rooms, where students took part in a specially tailored session designed to deepen their understanding of civic engagement and the importance of getting involved in shaping their city. They explored the structure of London’s government, learning how decisions are debated, made, and implemented to meet the needs of over nine million Londoners.

As part of the visit, the students also observed the quarterly Mayor’s Question Time, witnessing a particularly heated exchange between Sadiq Khan and London representatives over efforts to make transport safer for Londoners. This real-time insight into political accountability and scrutiny brought their learning to life and sparked thoughtful discussions about how elected officials address public concerns.

After the session, the group enjoyed a scenic ride on the London Cable Car, taking in stunning panoramic views of the city from above.
