An incredible start to the academic year which has seen 493 students attending sports clubs and 262 students represent Central Foundation Boys’ School.
A month into the academic year we have taken 27 teams on sports fixtures with the majority of fixtures being played against Highgate and Forest School. All of our teams put in competitive performances and demonstrated all the core values that are essential at Central Foundation.
Our Year 7s are comfortably through to the second round of the National Cup as they beat Shoreditch Park 7-0. Goals from Travis, Adam (2), Emanuel, Drew & Prince (2) ensured we were in the hat for the next round. The boys narrowly missed out on the finals day in the Islington & Camden 6-aside competition in tightly fought group. Our team are looking strong with lots of strength in depth.
Our Year 8s beat Mossbourne Academy 4-2 in the first round of the National Cup. A stunning free kick from Albert and goals from Macdavid, Isaiah & Archie completed the scoring in a competitive match at Winchmore Hill Sports Club.
Our Year 9s beat Highgate 2-1 in a competitive friendly ahead of their opening National Cup fixture. James took a superb free kick before Iker headed in the winner shortly before half-time. A solid defensive resistance will be something that the students require throughout what is hopefully a long season ahead. The boys are also through to finals day in the Islington & Camden 6-aside competition after topping their group – a superb squad performance on the day and we are all hoping they bring the trophy back to EC2A.
Unfortunately, our Year 10s narrowly missed out on penalties against Latymer School in an entertaining 3-3 draw. Despite Alex’s penalty saving heroics, we were edged out in the 6-5 in the penalty shootout.
The 1st XI were unfortunate enough to be knocked out of the National Cup in the first round. They led with a goal from Enrico and should have doubled their lead as Eddie rounded the keeper but he was rather controversially given an offside. This proved to be a pivotal moment as Woodbridge scored three late goals to knock us out in torrential rain. Finally, a historical moment for Central Foundation Boys’ School was when we managed to take four 6th form teams to Forest School. Four competitive games against strong opposition sets the season up nicely for our 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th XI.
The fixtures continue into October as our Cross-Country athletes are competing in the English Schools Cross-Country Championships, as well as starting the Islington Running League. Our Table-Tennis athletes have been training twice a week since the start of the year in preparation for Islington Table-Tennis Tournament. The winners of this tournament represent Islington in a tri series event against Camden & Hackney Schools.
Our football fixtures continue with our Year 8s & 10s competing in the Islington & Camden 6-aside competition as well as round 1 of the Middlesex Cup and round 2 of the ESFA cup for all other year groups. Our basketball teams will begin their Junior NBA competitions as well as starting the Greenhouse Sports league. Finally, our badminton teams are competing in the Islington Badminton Tournament in the hope to progress through to the London Borough Championships.
