On Thursday 27th March, a parent workshop was delivered to our parents by Dr Lottie Devey Smith, Educational Psychologist for Islington Council on the topic of “Executive functions and the adolescent brain: How to support your child to be secondary school ready“.
Parents were invited to join Dr Lottie Devey Smith to delve into the adolescent brain and its executive functions: emotional and impulse control, working memory, flexible thinking, organisation, self-monitoring and task initiation. Parents and carers participated in group activities to discover how the working memory functions and how to support children at home to develop these skills further. Parents were also able to discuss what they are already doing at home to help their child practice these skills, and shared advice with each other.
Dr Lottie Devey Smith also shared strategies on emotional coaching and how to empower teenagers to look after their mental health by learning how to regulate their emotions. The last part of the workshop was spent discussing practical ways to approach homework completion and revision techniques at home.
