LAMDA launch at CFBS

In September 2024, we launched a LAMDA course as part of our Central Baccalaureate programme. The LAMDA course was initially launched in Year 7 and 8 with a view to expand it across the school. LAMDA exam qualifications develop the learner as a disciplined student of theatre and public speaking, they develop a confidence and ability not only in the subject of theatre but in self-presentation. This is an essential and transferable skill for interviews, work place and further learning at Sixth form/College and Universities.

LAMDA Drama exams are a study of key skills in acting and public speaking with graded standards from introduction through to level 8. Students prepare set material perfecting it to technical and artistic standards of the LAMDA grades. LAMDA exams are a formal international recognised qualification run by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and are much like music grades. LAMDA grades at level 6,7 and 8 receive in addition medals and UCAS points for universities. The qualifications can be taken at any age.

At Central Foundation, the LAMDA course is delivered in small groups of 6 students during the curriculum time and after school. It further enhances our provision of building students’ performance and public speaking skills that so far have been developed through drama, debating, public speaking workshops and competitions as well as leadership opportunities.

The introduction of LAMDA offers a rare opportunity for every student to develop their communications and performance skills.

The benefits of participating in a LAMDA course are many:

  • Learning and Academic Development – there is a positive link between the LAMDA teaching and students’ behaviour for learning and academic development, particularly in terms of their spoken English, peer collaboration skills and some specific aspects of their written English.
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing – taking part in LAMDA positively impacts students’ mental health and wellbeing, particularly in terms of giving them skills to navigate emotionally challenging situations in their lives effectively.
  • Supporting students with Special Educational Needs – evidence found suggest that aspects of LAMDA’s structure and teaching were effective in supporting the academic engagement and progress of students with SEND.

Other benefits:

  • Increased confidence in a variety of school-based situations, including lessons and performance activities
  • Greater resilience
  • Empathy and emotional awareness
  • Creative thinking
  • Self-accountability
  • Supporting transition from primary to secondary school
  • Physical development and motor skills.
