On Thursday 6th February and group of Year 10/11 students took part in the annual Frankly Speaking competition hosted by Benjamin Franklin House at the US Embassy in Nine Elms.
Schools from across the capital took part in the challenging competition, debating topics from social media restrictions to the use of AI in schools. Our fantastic debaters, Mazen and Dawud, made it through the to Junior final against Barking Abbey and argued skillfully to propose the motion of ‘the US and UK’s special relationship is no longer important in a rapidly changing world.’ By incorporating thoughtful rebuttal and a strong argument that considered the role of other significant world-wide relationships, they won!
In addition to winning the overall competition, they also were selected by the judges for the following prizes:
- Dawud – Junior Final Winner, Runner-up Individual Speaker
- Mazen – Junior Final Winner, Best Individual Speaker
As the individual prize winner, Mazen will be invited to the House of Lords for a private tour with Baroness Anelay as well as a silver service lunch and a visit to the top of Big Ben.
A big thank you to Albert and Mylo who took on the challenging role of invigilators, ensuring that debaters were kept to time and managed the overall structure of the competition.
A huge congratulations to all who took part – we are excited to take part again next year!
