Careers in the Magistrates with Gerald Dowler

Our Year 12 A level Law students welcomed Gerald Dowler to their class on Friday 7th February, to hear about the role of a magistrate, and do some practice sentencing.

The students have learned in their A level Law curriculum about the magistrates court and how it functions within the UK’s legal systems. This was a wonderful opportunity to hear first hand from an experienced magistrate in how he approaches his role, and also have some practice themselves using the knowledge they have already gained from their school curriculum.

It was great having a visiting magistrate in our law lesson. All students really enjoyed the case study activity, as the video linked to what we were already taught about aggravating and mitigating factors. The information on the website around sentencing powers was clear and easy to understand. The case study made students feel as if they were magistrates, in a real case when trying to work out an appropriate sentence for the defendant.

Thank you to Mr Dowler for offering his time to our young people, and showing them how their current studies can be applied in the world of work.
