Over the summer, Year 9 students Aran, Joe and Oliver attended the Axiom Maths Summer School at the University of Cambridge. Across three days, they delved into fascinating mathematical concepts. They attended lectures from university lecturers and fellows on various applications of maths. Additionally, they participated in a session with Capital One, learning how businesses use mathematical concepts to make decisions. The students also forged new friendships with fellow mathematicians from schools across the country.
At the University of Cambridge, the pupils experienced student life firsthand—sleeping in student accommodation, dining in the hall, and attending lectures and seminars on the college site. All these experiences showed the pupils the exciting paths that maths can open for their future.
The summer school was organised by Axiom Maths, a charity which helps pupils with a heart and head for maths realise the potential of their power. Our maths circles run weekly and allow students to immerse themselves in challenging but satisfying maths from beyond the school curriculum. We currently have a Year 8 and 9 programme and are in the process of expanding to our new Year 7 students.
