Central Foundation is a unique school effectively combining a blend of modern and traditional values. We are inspired by our exceptional history and the success of our alumni, whilst at the same time always looking to the future.

We are committed to all our students achieving outstanding outcomes and leaving us as young people equipped with the skills, attitudes, knowledge, understanding and qualifications necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Central Foundation’s Sixth Form was recently graded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. In 2020, the students achieved excellent A-level and BTEC results with a 100% pass rate, with 78% of those grades A*-B. The Sixth Form, of 200 students, is mixed and attracts pupils from Islington as well as other boroughs.

We run bespoke programmes for students through our ‘Central Futures’ team supporting them in getting into their university of choice or into high quality employment or training. The Key Project programme, run in partnership with Slaughter and May, a top law firm, and The Access Project charity, aim to ensure that students go on to study at the best possible universities. Our recent record of getting pupils into Russell group universities is something we are particularly proud of. Our ‘Central Futures’ team has a wealth of contacts within the city and provides outstanding support and guidance for students who wish to opt for a vocational pathway during and after the Sixth Form.

The breadth of the curriculum in the Sixth Form is illustrated by the extensive variety of courses that students have chosen to study at university; from Aeronautical Engineering to Art, from Physics to Podiatry, and from Ancient History to Artificial Intelligence. As well as Oxford, we have pupils who have accepted offers to study many of the country’s top universities including; Imperial College, Bristol, University College London, King’s College, Manchester, Cardiff, Warwick, Bath and SOAS. We are equally proud of our students who have chosen to pursue vocationally based degrees such as Radiography, Nursing, Accountancy, Software Engineering and Cyber Security.

The excellent facilities of the sixth form centre include seven fully equipped ICT rooms, which are also used for teaching and private study as well as a common room. There is a large sixth form team which comprises of the Deputy Head, overseeing the Sixth Form, an Assistant Head in charge of A-levels, an Assistant Head in charge of our vocational provision, Head of Year 12 and 13, Careers Officer and Study supervisors.

Ofsted judged the Sixth Form provision to be ‘outstanding’ making the following comments:

  • The sixth form is outstanding, largely because of the excellent leadership.
  • Students achieve highly and are very well prepared for the next stage of their education, training and employment.
  • In Year 13 there has been an upward trend of continuous improvement.
  • The carefully planned personal development programme gives students an excellent understanding of how to stay safe in a variety of situations.
  • Attitudes to learning are excellent.

“Outstanding…students achieve highly and are well prepared for the next stage of their education, training and employment” Ofsted

Sixth Form Entrance Requirements 2022

To follow a full A-level programme, you will need an average GCSE point score of 6, including a score of 6 or a 7 in that particular GCSE subject.

We recommend that A-level pupils start on either 3 or 4 A-levels, dependent on a range of factors.

  • The strength of your GCSE results. If you average a GCSE point score of 7 plus, you are eligible for a 4 A-level programme.
  • If you are finding it difficult to narrow down to 3 A-levels, it is prudent to start on 4 and drop down to 3 after the first half-term.

Our A-level entry requirements are differentiated based on the subjects that you are looking to study. In the vast majority of cases, a grade 6 is sufficient to gain entry. However, the following subjects require a grade 7 for admission onto their A-level programme:

Maths, Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics.

To follow a BTEC/Cambridge Technical programme you will need an average GCSE point score of 4 (equivalent to a C grade) often including a score of 4 (C) in that particular GCSE subject as well as a minimum grade 4 (C) in Maths and English.

Please note that each student will attend a course guidance meeting with a member of the Sixth Form leadership team before being offered a place at Central Foundation Boys’ School Sixth Form. If you have not attained the entry grades, please contact neumannj@cfbs.islington.sch.uk and we will arrange for you to speak directly to a Sixth Form leader.
