Year 7 Debate Competition

4 of our Year 7 students took part in an inter-school debating competition held in July. This is the Grand Finale in a programme developed by law firm Hogan Lovells and the DMW Group -Debate It! The programme aims to “improve pupils’ oratory, writing and reading skills; as well as helping them to develop their knowledge of current affairs, critical thinking skills and confidence.

The debating competition, held at Hogan Lovells’ offices in Holburn, had Central Foundation Boys’School competing against all-girls school Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Our boys displayed some excellent debating skills, showing the remarkable progression they have undertook since starting the programme last year.

Despite impressing the judges Team B from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson took the trophy after an intense debate: “This House believes that all schools should be of mixed-gender.” The topic choice made for some interesting ‘floor debates’ with some challenging questions being asked, as both teams were from single-sex schools! Our students all received medals and certificates of merit for taking part in the competition.

We are very proud of our students’ progress throughout the year and look forward to seeing more pupils join the debate club next year.
