Across RE classrooms in CFBS you could hear the faint hum of a singing bowl, followed by blissful silence. No, it’s not the summer holidays already but a new project called “Breathing Space” where classes are offered meditation as part of the curriculum.

Breathing Space is a programme from Bodhi Tree which introduces the practice of mindfulness and meditation to students as part of a weekly routine. The key element is the ‘Three Minute Breathing Space’, a mindfulness meditation where the students are taught to pay attention primarily to their body and breathing. Mindfulness is awareness of the moment.

Meditation is a way of cultivating more awareness and is shown to aid development of emotional, cognitive and social skills that support effective learning, positive behaviour and general well-being. This meditation also helps children to:

  • Relax
  • Reduce Stress Levels
  • Concentrate Better
  • Learn and Work More Effectively
  • Develop Emotional Intelligence
  • Improve Self-Awareness and Empathy
  • Work Together More Co-operatively
  • Expand Skills and Creativity

With the older students taking important exams at the moment the Breathing Space Programme could not have come at a more relevant time. Hopefully the students involved will remember all that they’ve learned and apply their skills again when they reach Year 11.
