Two months ago, two architects from WSP came to Central Foundation to deliver a lecture and workshop with Year 9 science students. They had both worked on building The Shard, London’s tallest building.

The workshop saw the boys spend half an hour building the basic structure of a new community building. Since then the boys have worked in groups to work on detailed models of their buildings, linking in with research they have carried out taking into consideration building materials, pros and cons of designs and the type of space and needs a community centre would need.

The two architects returned to see how the boys had continued their works. The top six groups presented their models to the architects and each delivered a presentation to them and their year group detailing the reasoning behind their designs both outside and in.

After much deliberation the winners were chosen by the architects and rewarded with a prize of a free visit to The Shard’s 72nd floor with a view 800ft above the city of London.
