Fatima Zaman explains Kofi Annan's mission to the Sixth Form

In March, the sixth form welcomed Fatima Zaman as a guest speaker to hear about her work with Extremely Together.

Year 12 students who study sociology, history and government and politics were invited to listen to a lecture from the East London activist, though the seminar was open to all interested sixth formers.

Ms Zaman detailed her professional journey that took her from growing up in Tower Hamlets to working for former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. Her work with the Annan foundation focusses on anti-extremism and de-radicalisation, something she also talked about passionately to the students, but this work was not always her dream career.

Ms Zaman revealed that making the most of her opportunities going to university set her on this pathway, having taken advantage of an opportunity at SOAS University to study in Chicago in the US, and there joined the Obama Foundation. While in the US she also took advantage of the opportunity visit Canada and attend the One Young World Summit. It was there she met Kofi Annan, alongside Emma Watson, Meghan Markle and Justin Trudeau.

Ms Zaman concluded her seminar by explaining how her aspirations and willingness to take advantage of opportunities was what had led to her success.
