Last Friday, noted historian Sir Richard Evans accepted an invitation to come and speak to the a gifted and talented group of Central Foundation Boys’ School’s history students from Year 10 and 11 after some previous correspondence.

Last term, history teacher Mr Samuel used a debate between Sir Evans and AN Wilson about the Nazi economy as a springboard to engage them in the subject. As part of the activity they all wrote letters to Sir Evans expressing their views and Mr Samuel decided to send them on to the famous historian.

Not only did he respond individually to each letter, he then offered to come into the school and speak to the boys. Having a published historian, with a thorough understanding of the subject matter, helped the boys consider their opinions of German politics from new perspectives. Sir Evans also imparted some essay writing and journalistic wisdom with the pupils to help them with both their exams and coursework.
