Jack Petchey Speak Out Awards

December 14th, 2011

Speaking & Listening Training

24 of our Year 10 students who have a talent for speaking and listening recently received training by experts from The Speaker’s Trust. From this group 3 students (Milo Maris, Charlie Kirby-Jacobs and Cyrus Stephen Smith) were selected to represent the school at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Awards Challenge, which took place last Monday 12th December.

The Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge is a public speaking competition run by SpeakersBank in schools throughout London and Essex. It is the largest speaking competition for young people in the world with over 70,000 Year 10 students from 32 boroughs in London and 14 districts in Essex having participated in the challenge.

The competition gives the students the opportunity to talk openly and honestly on any subject they feel strongly about. The finalists had to plan and perform 3 minute speeches in front of a panel of of VIP judges and representatives from other schools. Two years ago our student Idris Sobande was the overall winner of this award.

It was a long tiring session and the event went on until 8.30pm at Holloway University, but the students’ enthusiasm and fantastic public speaking skills were a credit to the school. All of them performed with great poise and confidence and they held their own. Unfortunately, we didn’t win any prizes this year, but the students were certainly winners, as were all of the Year 10 pupils who took part in the public speaking training.
