February 6th, 2018

The students heard form one of the survivors of Nazi persecution

In late January, 12 GCSE historians attended Holocaust Memorial Day at the Islington Assembly Hall to comemmorate those who have suffered in genocides such as the Holocaust.

The pupils heard from Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and Shadow Secretary of State Emily Thornberry among other high profile speakers on the day.

As well as contemporary speakers, the boys listened to the testimony of Ernest Simon. He was raised in Austria but fled from there to England on the Kindertransport effort at the age of eight. He talked first hand at his experience of the rise of Nazism, but also growing up in Leeds as an outsider and how he put his efforts into an economics degree and starting a business.

After the speeches, the boys formed a poem based around the diary entries written by survivors, helping them to empathise with their experiences.
