Draw a Dragon Competition

Year 9 student George Riley recently won a national art competition run by Hodder & Stoughton for their publication The Song of the Quarkbeast by British novelist Jasper Fforde. The novel is the first in “The Last Dragonslayer” trilogy, set in an alternate world where magic is real.

Jasper himself picked the winner and the artwork has now been published, along with a congratulatory message from Jasper.

In the book Jasper wrote:

This was a very tricky decision for us as the quality was very high indeed, but after much consideration we decided that George Riley’s was the winning entry. We felt that not only was it a very striking image that has been undertaken with much skill and thought, but also captured the spirit of Jennifer’s world, with cars and cooling towers. We also liked the dragon with a long, sinuous neck for peering inquisitively at stuff, and quite naturally, a long tail to balance it. It’s a lovely picture – thank you!”

The Song of the Quarkbeast is now available to buy in hardback from all good book stores. Congratulations again to George!
