Debate Mate Nationals 2011

August 11th, 2011

The School Debate Team Contenders

Last Wednesday 29th June was the Debate Mate Nationals at the Royal Institute of Great Britain, where the school debate team competed against schools from across the country. The team have been busy preparing for the event at the debate club, which runs throughout the academic year.

The team was up against St Angela’s Ursuline School to debate whether nuclear power stations should be shut down. Central Foundation was the opposition in the debate which was chaired by MP David Miliband. Sadly, the team were knocked out by St Angela’s who became the overall winners of the contest in the end.

The Central Foundation team were the youngest at the competition (all Year 8 students with one Year 10) with their appearance at the nationals marking a great accomplishment.  The debate club will continue in the new school year and new members are welcome.

There was some excellent coverage of the event in the Guardian.
