National peer-to-peer debating programme Debate Mate recently celebrated the launch of their 2011/2012 initiative at the Royal Geographical Society. A group of Central Foundation Boys’ School students joined more than 800 other school children in the auditorium to spectate the event. Two of our Year 9 students, Elliot Colley and George Benson, took part in the incredible show debate alongside world champions. Elliot and George are both part of the Central Foundation Boys’ School debating team that made it to the finals last term.

This time, opposing the world champions and each other, they debated the motion; this house would reintroduce corporal punishment. Elliot and George exuded confidence and constructed some outstanding arguments.

One time world university champion and two-time world schools champion, Chris Croke, told Huffington Post UK he was “very impressed” with the junior debaters and noted they were “confident and articulate.”

Our group of students who attended to show their support found the event both entertaining and inspirational. Year 7 student Zac Richardson, who disagreed that corporal punishment should be reintroduced, thought “the debate and speakers were good, the teams worked well… I enjoyed the event and would go to it again.”

We are extremely proud of our debate team’s efforts and pleased Elliot and George were given another opportunity to represent the school in such an exceptional way.

The school’s debate club runs every Wednesday after school and new members are welcome. For further details visit our extended school activities section: Extra-Curricular.
