The Year 9 and ear 13 artists in Rainham, next to the RSPB centre

14 artists from Year 9 and two sixth formers visited Rainham Marshes on 10 March as part of a project with the Wellcome Collection gallery.

During February, the Art Department won a competition to work with the Wellcome Collection around their current year-long exhibition Making Nature. In the next few months, artists from Years 9 and 13 will be working with the gallery and artist Verity-Jane Keefe. Throughout the next few months there will be a number of trips and workshops organised by the Wellcome Collection, concluding with pupils’ work being featured in the second part of the Making Nature exhibition.

The group of artists visited the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ (RSPB) nature reserve in Essex. An RSPB worker gave them a tour of the reserve and explained to them how the man-made reserve attempts to recreate nature. This gave the artists an unusual perspective on the theme of Making Nature and made them think about how it will not be just their artwork that makes nature, but also that it can reflect other methods of making nature.

The project will continue with a series of workshops at the school by Keefe and visits to the Making Nature exhibition.
