Central Foundation Boys’ School are again celebrating a tremendous set of A and AS level results.

The A level pass rate was 99% and the outcomes of the students’ overall performance was an improvement on the previous two years, which themselves were judged to be outstanding by Ofsted. Many students achieved exceptional results with over 20% of all grades being A or A*. We are pleased to report that by midday on Thursday 18th August all students wishing to go to university had secured a place.

Central Foundation AS results were also the best ever with over 60% of grades being a C grade or better.

Students have worked incredibly hard with their dedicated teachers and they all thoroughly deserve the success they have achieved.

Central Foundation Boys’ School GCSE results at an all time high with sizzling Science results

Students and staff at Central Foundation Boys’ School are celebrating after another excellent crop of GCSE results. Students achieved a remarkable 82% 5+ A*-C overall pass rate, a 23% increase in just two years and an 8% increase on last year’s results. The number of students achieving 5+ A*-C including English and Maths has also gone up to 65%, an impressive increase of 15 percentage points in two years.

Furthermore, the school is particularly proud of the results in the Sciences, with students attaining an incredible 100% pass rate in Chemistry and 100% and 97%, respectively, in Biology and Physics. This good news comes on the back of an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted classification for Central Foundation’s Sixth Form and excellent A Level results.

The school is also celebrating a number of individual stories of success. All these boys will continue to study at Central Foundation’s Sixth Form Consortium:

On the 9th of February Central Foundation won the Islington Young Consumer of the Year competition at the Emirates Stadium, beating teams from St Aloysius and Mount Carmel to retain the trophy which the school has won 4 times in the last 6 Years.

In an electrifying final the boys, Ilias Belhaddad, Khalid Muruz, Malik Yansenah, Govinda Deb and Mert Topuz, romped to victory by answering questions on Law, Current Affairs and Business.

The Young Consumer of the Year Challenge is organised by the Trading Standards Institute and supported nationally by a number of high profile sponsors. The local competition involves Islington schools competing against each other, testing the students on a wide range of issues.

TV’s Paul Whitehouse chaired the event and spent time with the excited winners afterwards. They now go through to represent Islington in the London Finals at the O2 Arena in March. Another team from Central Foundation made it to the semi-finals: Saeef Ahmed, Ridwan Chowdhury, Nahid Uddin and Tommy Collins.

Well done everyone!

Our Year 10 Gifted and Talented group of students attended a presentation in January by the University of Cambridge on ‘Applying to Cambridge’. They were joined by fellow Year 10 Gifted and Talented students from St Aloysius College, Highbury Grove and Highbury Fields School. These schools along with Central Foundation Boys’ School form the Islington Consortium (IC6).

The aim of the session was to alter the students’ initial perceptions of the university – that it is impossible for most people to gain entry to. The guest speaker himself studied at the university and so demonstrated how people from all walks of life could find themselves at Cambridge.

His time at the university offered a valuable insight into an education at the school. He provided a lot of useful information about student accommodation, financial support, degree choices and the application process. It left a lot for the students’ to consider and at the end of the lecture is was clear that Cambridge University was no longer seen as too intimidating to consider applying to.

These informative sessions on higher education will continue when the same students visit Corpus Christi College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, this March.

Lawyers from leading law firm Slaughter and May have been working with our Year 10 business students, helping them improve their understanding of the law. The sessions are part of the Lawyers in Schools scheme, developed by the Citizenship Foundation. The scheme places practising and trainee lawyers into the classroom to work with young people, providing an opportunity for them to discuss and explore various legal issues with students from local schools.

The sessions are based around laws and regulations and how they affect consumers and businesses. Once a week each class will have 6 Slaughter and May lawyers to work with the students in groups. The four sessions discuss various aspects of law including: criminal and civil law, copyright law, consumer law and employment law.

We are delighted our school has been chosen to be involved with the scheme. We know our students will find the sessions informative and useful.

The Mayhem Company’s most recent play – The Riot Act included 10 students from Central Foundation Boys’ School. The play was devised by company members over a three month period and written by CFBS student Tahmid Chowdhury in Year 12. Tahmid interviewed teachers, students, politicians, police officers and young people to inform the play of reasons, real and imagined, behind the riots on our streets last summer.

The Riot Act was performed at the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Centre to packed audiences including many staff and students along with the play write and company Patron Edward Bond who endorsed the play, the company and its young writer.

A fine example of how boys at Central Foundation spend their time and imagination outside of school. Congratulations.

We were recently pleased to welcome back former student Reggie Yates, a television presenter and radio DJ currently hosting the chart show on BBC Radio 1, who came into the school this month.

Reggie was there to speak with one of his former teachers about his time at the school, details of which will be used as part of an upcoming radio programme about growing up in a single parent family. Together they took a trip down memory lane, looking at his school work and comments made by old teachers.

Reggie last came to the school in November to give an inspirational talk as part of the annual Founder’s Day celebrations. We are thrilled to see him again at Central Foundation Boys’ School, interacting with our students and staff, and wish him all the best for his bright future.

The interview will be aired on BBC Radio 5 Live. Exact details at this time are not known.
