About Us

The School Direct salaried scheme is an employment based teacher training programme that enables graduates with three or more years of work experience to train as teachers whilst receiving a full time salary.

A supportive partnership
As a trainee teacher within the Highbury Fields School Direct Partnership you will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging learning and teaching. You will be employed as a full time unqualified teacher in one of our three partnership schools, where you will also receive bespoke training to guide you in your journey to becoming an excellent teacher. You will be assigned a mentor, with whom you will meet on a weekly basis to ensure that your training needs are met. Trainee teachers begin their employment in school on the first day of the academic year and will attend staff meetings and training days, meaning that you will feel like, and be treated as, part of the teaching community from the outset of your training.

Out of school support
Your school based training will be enhanced by a series of lectures and workshops delivered by our partnership training provider, the Institute of Education. Run over the course of 15 days spread across the autumn and spring terms, these sessions are designed to help you engage with effective learning and teaching practices, deepen your subject specific pedagogy and encourage you to become a reflective and analytical teacher. Throughout this process, you will be coached by a university tutor, who will also support your development through tutorials, visits to school and guidance with assignments.

In addition to your time at the Institute, you will also follow a six week placement at a second school in the partnership. This will give you the experience of working with young people from a variety of different backgrounds and at least one of your placements will give you experience of teaching in a post-16 environment.

Your development towards becoming a qualified teacher will be assessed by observations of your teaching practice and by a portfolio of evidence that will measure your progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Successful completion of the trainee teacher programme will lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
