A level economists visit US Ambassador’s residence
May 23rd, 2016
In January, the school was visited by the US Ambassador to the UK: Matthew Barzun. Having been so impressed with the response of the students, he invited a number of Central Foundation sixth formers to his residence.
Four pupils from the Central Foundation Sixth Form spent an afternoon at Mr Barzun’s residence in Regent’s Park among other guests for the day. As well as being able to continue their conversation with Mr Barzun about UK-US relations, they were also able to be involved in an intimate discussion with Austan Goolsbee, the former economic advisor to US President Barack Obama.
Mr Goolsbee, who is now Professor of Economics at the Booth School of Business shared his wealth of knowledge with the boys about global economics, particularly the impact of automation and computers on employment and the impact of global oil prices. The boys used the opportunity to ask Mr Goolsbee’s opinion on the EU Referendum from an economic perspective and how economics influences political policy, based on his time serving under President Obama.
The afternoon gave the boys a complex view on economics and a first hand look at where an economics career can lead.
