Winter Concert

January 4th, 2016

The string quartet performing Purcell's Rondeau
On the penultimate evening of term, Music School was out in full force performing at the Winter Concert.

The evening began on a classical note with the string group performing Arioso by Handel before the junior choir, singers from Year 7 and 8 only, sang the Christmas carol Silent Night. The Fret Wrx guitar group played the ’60s guitar anthem Wipeout; later in the evening they also played The Shadows’ instrumental hit Walk Don’t Run.

This was followed by two quartet performances. The woodwind ensemble gave their first public performance, having been established in October, with an instrumental take on Mr Sandman before a quartet of musicians from the string group played ‘Rondeau’ from Purcell’s Abdelazer.

The house band performed four songs, including the encore Last Christmas
The house band then played Wonderwall, as made famous by Oasis, with Bruno Xavier Lopes and Adam Toumi trading vocals and Samuel Alferink-Kamara on lead guitar.

The concert band performed an instrumental big band version of the Frank Sinatra hit Come Fly With Me. It was followed by the chamber choir, comprised of some 20 singers from all five Year groups singing Seasons of Love from the West End show Rent.

After Seasons of Love, the house band took back to the floor to play out the rest of the concert. Firstly they performed a modern take on the traditional Turkish song Misirlou, before taking on Bruno Mars’ 2010 hit single Just The Way You Are with Joydeep Shil singing and Noufel Mansouri rapping. The band stayed on for a surprise encore, sending the audience home with a cover of Wham!’s Last Christmas.
