The Year 12 class were given a tour around parts of the Lake District

Last week, the Year 12 geography class visited the Blencathra region of the Lake District in Cumbria.

The group arrived at midday on Wednesday and studied the glacial features of the hills, which they have been learning about recently in class. By viewing the shapes of the mountain, they saw the erosive force of glaciers on the terrain as well as drawing and annotating field sketches.

After producing hypotheses in the evening, the group headed out early on Thursday to collect data at various sites along the river channels in the valleys. After dinner they used their collected data in presentations and analysed the statistics.

The three day trip involved plenty of hill walking and exercise

On the final day the group trekked through the valley of Borrowdale to observe glacial features. They discussed how they could describe and explain features in their exams. Students again developed an understanding of the scale of the features and the forces needed to create them by glaciers.
After three days of walking, hiking and learning, the group departed the Lake District by train just after lunch.
