Students and Staff with MP Lynne Featherstone

Yesterday a selection of Year 7 to 10 students were taken to the Houses of Parliament to take part in a day promoting the Campaign for Body Confidence. The campaign aims to tackle society’s obsession with body image ‘ideals’ and to change attitudes to bodily perfection. It is being funded by HEIF and being conducted in collaboration with Central YMCA.

The event began with a talk by Dr Sarah Edmunds of Westminster University. Dr Edmunds is a research fellow, based in the Department of Psychology, whose work includes promoting positive body image in children and adolescents. The students used the ideas discussed in her presentation to form a workshop with staff members. The outcome of which was to create interactive lesson plans to bring back to the school to share with other students.

After the workshop the group listened Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone speaking about raising awareness on dealing with diversity. They were then invited to a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. After the event the students had the opportunity to ask the MPs questions.

Central YMCA commissioned a poll in April 2011 with over 150 MPs to find out their thoughts on body image issues. For the results and more information visit the website: www.ymca.co.uk/bodyconfidence

Year 9 visited the National Portrait Gallery on 24th January this year. The students drew from the exhibits using a number of drawing techniques. They also explored sculpture techniques with an artist, making their own relief sculpture and self-portrait using clay.

On 14th February this year the Year 10′s visited the Royal Academy to take part in a Sculptural Workshop. The students spent the morning looking at the different sculptures displayed at the British Sculpture exhibition to gain inspiration. They then worked with a Sculpture Artist to produce a  piece of their own. The afternoon session was spent building upon what they had seen, and then looking at what the everyone in the group had created.
